Abstract

Vitamin D may play an important role in theetiology of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Vitamin D is regarded asa neuroactive steroid affecting brain development and function. Itplays an essential role in myelination, which is important forconnectivity in the brain. Studies have shown that decreased vitaminD levels in patients, decreased maternal vitamin D levels duringpregnancy, and decreased exposure to solar UVB might increase therisk for ASD. In addition, autism symptoms and global functioning mayimprove after vitamin D supplementation. Here, we sought to aggregateinformation from previous publications on vitamin D levels and ASD,in order to achieve a higher statistical power and thereby todetermine the validity of vitamin D deficiency as a risk factor forASD. For this meta-analysis, 11 studies met the inclusion andexclusion criteria, accounting for a total of 870 ASD patients and782 healthy controls. Levels of serum 25(OH) D in participants withASD were significantly lower than controls, suggesting that lowervitamin D level might be a risk factor for ASD.
Themean 25-OHD levels in patients with severe autism were significantlylower than those in patients with mild/moderate autism. Serum 25-OHDlevels had significant negative correlations with Childhood AutismRating Scale (CARS) scores. (Saad KS et al, VitaminD status in autism spectrum disorders and the efficacy of vitamin Dsupplementation in autistic children, NutrNeurosci. 2015Apr 15. [Epub ahead of print])Ancora  piu' interessante il fatto che con lacorrezione del deficit vitaminico si e' avuto un miglioramento deisintomi Collectively, 80.72% (67/83) of subjects who receivedvitamin D3 treatment had significantly improved outcome, which wasmainly in the sections of the CARS and aberrant behavior checklistsubscales that measure behavior, stereotypy, eye contact, andattention span.
Questo per sfruttare ilpresunto sinergismo tra le due sostanze"thereare speculations that vitamin D and n-3 LCPUFAs may improve ASDsymptoms because of their shared functions and each nutrient-specificrole that complements the other nutrient’sfunctions Bothnutrients are powerful anti-inflammatory agents, immune modulatorsand neuroprotectors".
