a un numero così elevato di bambini con disturbi dello spettro autistico (64%)
, a dispetto dalla scarsità di sperimentazioni controllate  che ne esplorino l’efficacia e l’innocuità. (despite the paucity of evidence
supporting their effectiveness or safety.)
 
Tra le cause di questo preoccupante uso di
psicofarmaci gli autori ipotizzano che essi vengano prescritti non a
complemento, ma in sostituzione dei trattamenti abilitativi di provata
efficacia. Anche la distribuzione geografica supporta questa ipotesi  Infatti un maggior consumo  di psicofarmaci viene documentato dove i
servizi abilitativi sono più carenti. 
 
However,
physicians often
prescribe nonindicated
medications to children in an “off-label,”
trial-and-error fashion to help manage
troublesome symptoms in patients, especially
if other treatments are not
available
or accessable.

significantly more likely than children
from the northeast and west to be
multiclass polypharmacy users, raising
questions about the availability of nonpharmacologic,
behaviorally based
services and treatments in the south,
where other health outcomes and
health care services have been found to
be poorer than in other parts of the
country.26,27
 
The few ASD
treatments thought to be effective are
intended to be early, intensive, and
behaviorally based, and they are thus
taxing, expensive, and difficult to access.
It is perhaps not surprising then that so many of the
children with ASD in
our study received psychotropic medications,
alone and in combination, over
long periods of time despite the paucity
of evidence supporting
their effectiveness
or
safety.
 
Per rendere accessibili a tutti i bambini e
adulti con grave disabilità mentale i trattamenti di elezione , evitando che
vengano dati psicofarmaci là dove sarebbe necessaria una buona abilitazione,  bisogna anzitutto creare le competenze.
 
Ben vengano dunque iniziative come quella della casa editrice Vannini che organizza a Brescia una due giorni sul tema
